Recover Your Portable External Hard Disk Drive Files

I was sold on the portability factor of the Western Digital Passport or WD Passport external hard disk drive, so I bought one with the primary reason of backing up all my important files from my other computers. And so I did, I transferred my large movie and music collections to it. I was pleased with myself that I did purchase the WD Passport. And then disaster struck. One day, while happily using my WD Passport, I accidentally slipped and dragged the WD Passport along with me. All I heard was a loud thud thereafter.

The unfortunate event left my WD Passport unusable or so I thought. My laptop is able to recognize it but not able to browse through with all my files in it. Worse, so many websites that I googled for a solution were not of any help. And so i sought to find a solution myself. And it was a walk in the park. Here are the easy steps:

1. Run cmd.exe
2. On cmd, type chkdsk (the drive letter of your WD Passport): /r

In my case, my WD Passport is in drive E. So i entered the following command on cmd: chkdsk e: /r

Be patient afterwards as it takes hours for chkdsk to find, fix and recover drive errors and bad sectors.
