Woohoh! this blog has just been awarded by Google with a page rank of 2! And don't you dare belittle that 2, LOL. This domain only started more than a month ago. Although there are various discussions on the usefulness/relevance of the Google Page Rank nowadays, i think it is very important. A high page rank or even just a page rank means some importance in Google's eyes of your website and would most likely place your site in a higher ranking in the Google search engine results. Also, if you do reviews, you will get more opportunities if you have a high PR.
There is no formal or informal acknowledgment from Google guru Matt Cutts of an impending Google Page Rank update but several bloggers have reported a PR update so i checked mine out of curiosity and not expecting anything since this domain is very much new, but lo and behold page rank checker said i have a PR2 blog! That is a nice treat indeed. And i don't even update this blog much. Nor have i really devoted any valuable time doing any SEO. But there. I guess one has to just write some interesting content. And that content should be written with as much original input.

Turn your cellphone into a WiFi hotspot
Turn your cellphone into a WiFi hotspot. Yes, you heard it right, turn your cellphone instantly to become a WLAN (Wi-Fi) HotSpot. You can connect your laptops, iPods, EeePCs and internet tablets to internet easily and securely using your mobile phone's 3G internet connection. So that means, only 3G capable cellphones can do this. Nokia S60 3rd Ed phones are a sure bet although most mobile phone nowadays have this feature, even the iPhone recently went 3G.
With this solution, you will carry internet in your pocket, and will always have a secured personal WLAN (Wi-Fi) HotSpot on-the-go! Multiple devices can connect in parallel and seamlessly share the same 3G internet connection.
So at this point, let me tell how you can turn your cellphone into a wifi hotspot. It's actually as easy as counting 1-2-3 to do so.
First, one should download this software called, JoikuSpot from here. Don't worry, stingy folks, its all for free! (But there is a premium edition that is not free, but you don't really need the premium edition anyway).
And that's it actually, just install and off you go.
If you still have not downloaded and installed it (and probably why you're still reading this), here are some more of what the software can do:
JoikuSpot Light Features
* HTTP(S) protocol support
* WLAN access to internet with laptops, iPods and internet tablets
* Secured access and user control
* Multiple parallel connections
* User definable access point and settings
* GPS location mapping
* Supports S60 3rd Ed mobile phones

Philippines wins Gold in Beijing Olympics
That headline sure is eyegrabbing. But the headline Philippines wins gold in Beijing Olympics although true does not end there and is not the whole story, unfortunately. Willy Wang of the Philippines won gold in the "demonstration" sport of Wushu in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Wushu is only a demonstration sport, therefore the victory of Willy Wang will not count in the regular medal standings.
Willy Wang won the gold medal in the combined events of men’s nanquan and nangun (bare fists) Friday to somehow make up for the Philippines disastrous (non) performance in the Beijing Olympics. The Philippines have not won a single medal in any event. The Philippine Sports Commission should be abolished/revamped/heads should roll because it has failed mesirably in its mission and mandate.
I still congratulate Willy Wang, and we should be proud of him. He deserves every accolade there is for winning the gold in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In fact, we as a people should honor him just as if he won a regular Olympic gold.
This wushu Olympic gold is reminiscent of the gold medal in Bowling won by Arianne Cerdeña in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Ariane Cerdeña’s Olympic gold in bowling did not count because Bowling was an exhibition sport in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Ariane Cerdena however got as much accolade as if she had won a regular Olympic gold when she returned to the country.
UPDATE: It was announced that the wushu tournament was although held in an Olympic venue and was held during the Games duration, was only called an International Wushu Tournament.
* Note that Willy Wang was a part of the Filipino athlete contingent in the Presidential send-off party for the Beijing Olympics at the Palace.

Ipit Taxi Gang
I came across this piece of Metro news in an online paper and i say this is very very disturbing a modus operandi. Some Pinoys are getting clever in their ways on how to effectively rob somebody. I just hope the police is going to act on these dastardly acts soon. This random act is really fair game and could happen to anyone. Imagine riding a taxi and go through this ordeal.
Earlier this year, caught on video was another "taxi" modus operandi where the taxi driver would snatch a girl's handbag from the driver's window and then deliberately drag the pedestrian to not be able to run after the taxi driver (as if anyone would) or even remember its plate number. Hayy..these are dangerous times...belatedly, I also remember that there is this "Dura Gang" too, and an incident experienced by a doctor posted in his multiply blog involving these hideous creatures. The "Dura gang" would literally spit in your shirt and then points you to the fact of that spit which purpose is actually to distract you in order for him and his cohorts to take your valuables. Life in the Metro...

iPhone 3G Review from a Filipino abroad Perspective
I paid $199 for the iPhone 3G but I needed a 2 year contract with AT&T to get it. This is why the iPhone is priced differently in the Philippines.
First off, the OS. it's clean, relatively speedy, and the app store offers a good amount of free and paid add on applications for it. As of now, I have approximately 20 different apps.
3g service kinda sucks - i've been reading the complaints and they say it is probably a software problem (hoping it is), but others say that its a physical hardware problem (please god no!!). Damn slow. If your moving, like in a car, the service sucks even more.
wifi - great on this. if I place the iphone right next to my USB54g adapter, i usually get 1 bar less. transmission rate is pretty good for the specs and the phone can handle a lot of different security protocals like WPA, WEP, etc.. currently using WPA.
Texting - I'm used to using the number pad and the iphone uses a qwerty style interface. Here's what irks me -- my no handwriting recognition. My P900 did that well and this phone can't do it. They say 3rd party apps will probably have it but reports say that apple doesn't allow enough enough access to developers for this to become possible for texting. As for using the qwerty- it takes getting used to but the learning curve isn't too steep.
MMS - sorry, not possible. As of yet.
Email support - pretty nice actually. Push email, html, and clicking links in email app will open the web browser automatically. I'm using it to manage 3 email accounts. In comparison, I used my v6maxx to manage my gmail account (yahoo was too damn hard to configure).
GPS - not bad. Doesn't support turn by turn but if you zoom in enoughg, you can see yourself moving thru traffic. In comparison, my Tom Tom, is great. It tells me when to turn and how far away from the turn I am. Both give you an estimated time of arrival.
Notes - nothing special.
Camera - no video, and the camera is only 2 mega pixels. Photo management sucks. It's too much of a hassle to organize your pictures on the phone by itself. No folder management. you need to connect it to a PC to use it (windows port of itunes sucks). Picture quality will be posted later. Want to share a photo? you can email it... no sharing through bluetooth or wifi. I don't know why. There might be a couple of perspective apps for this but haven't seen them yet.
Music management - Great at it but not that great... First off, you need itunes. But simply great at organizing music. Nuff said.
Web browsing - this is where the iphone shines but misses the target by a hair. You get full html browser support. When you visit a website, you'll get a full view, not a stripped down mobile version. My biggest complaint - no flash support...
why is this important? Let's say your bored and want to watch a video on uhm, www.spankwire.com - no luck.
The iphone does have youtube support, but videos there are ported over to quicktime so you can see it on the iphone.
Personal conclusion - not worth the 37K.
All the stuff that makes the iphone worth its price has everything to do with connectivity. 3g is liveable and wifi is great. Here, wifi is everywhere - people just don't secure their routers here. In the philippines, it's a different story. As far as I know, globe has a crappy 3g network and unlimited data plan for globe has yet to surface.
Final score for the iPhone is a 6 or 7 for 199 dollars in the US but considering the Philippine environment, it drops down to a 4.
Biggest gripe - no cut and paste function... my P900 had this, and it was essential.
Hope that helps some people make up their minds about it.

It pays to write it yourself
It's true blogging pays, last month alone i earned $700 on my blogs and i should have done it way earlier than waste my time doing all sort of things on those social networking sites and chatting on YM and Skype. And i would have earned more if not for a stupid thing i did because of something i have read online. You see, before, i was not doing well on my Adsense earnings and i then researched the net high and low on how to fairly improve my Google revenue.
And that is when i stumbled upon some shitty site who at first seemed reliable by posting his Adsense earnings proof. That site explained that Adsense had introduced Smart Pricing and that one should take out ads placed in multiple sites, which i have, and i did because i think i will now have better revenue. Wrong. And the gullible in me took it the wrong way too, basically because i was just new to blogging, and what i did was the unthinkable next.
I deleted all my blogs except for the one with a good Adsense revenue. And those blogs i deleted were getting a pretty respectable traffic if i were to gauge it on the Top Blogs rankings now. Those were pretty good niche sites too. One became a hit with a blogging network with an audience intended for North America that they featured it in their publications in Europe and Canada, mind you! (And they thought i was a US resident, roflol) And the greedy in me thought i will earn more by Smart Pricing by deleting all my blogs except for one. Turned out, for one to make money on Adsense, you have to maintain so many sites or maintain one but write so many posts a day. Word of advice, Don't just copy paste from another site, you not only get the ire of the writer but Google itself punishes duplicate content, and in the long run, your blog will not last long.
I guess that was my growing pains in blogging. Now, my blogs are in a strong position in their respective niche. But to this day, i really regret those blogs i deleted that can never be recovered, even the Internet Archive does not have them. I could have earned an additional $100 to $300 on them a month. So i guess my advice to novice bloggers, don't believe everything you read on the net from so-called SEO experts, money making gurus, etc.. build your content by writing it yourself and follow trends searched for by users. It pays to write it yourself.

MRT Cellphone Pass
I went to Glorietta yesterday for a project and me who always like, acts in the last minute, surmised that since i will be riding in two state-of-the-art mass transit rail systems of the Philippines, namely the LRT2 and the MRT, i will be able to reach my destination at my self allocated and calculated time. The ride to Cubao on the LRT2 was a breeze alright, but horrors, the ride or should i say the "before the MRT ride" was a horrendous possibility after i saw a throng of people lining up to buy the MRT ticket pass. Then it hit me, where is that damn feature called "pass something" i saw in the early evening newscast. Instead of me lining up for the tickets, i decided since i have some time to spare why not just go back to Gateway where wifi is free and search the net instead for that "pass something" i saw on tv weeks ago.
And so while comfortably seated in the Gateway fastfood section, i quickly went back to business and googled, and i found two. But there were not much info really 'bout the MPass, yes, it was MPass, aside from people sharing their experience or the lack of it with a photo and captioning it with some impressive they have seen it in Hongkong or god knows where outside this country for effects.
Well, i went to the Globe Business Center instead and they said they don't know about it. Not surprised, telco's here are jurassic or gullible, look at the iPhone or 3G charging. And then i stumbled upon Sulit.com of all places (websites, actually) and there it was. It is called the AXS Card and it can be purchased and is reloadable in any LOADEXTREME outlets. I found one in those cellphone stalls in Farmers and it costs 250 pesos. It says it is preloaded with 100 pesos.

In its press release, AXS Card is said to be the latest stored-value card offering that is fast and convenient fare payment and access to the MetroStar Rail Transit (MRT) and Pasig Ferry rides. Shushal, di lang pang-lupa.
And they have lofty plans for the future. They said that it is the newest & easiest alternative to pay for your MRT or other form of rides in the future that is reloadable thru text. The stored value inside your AXS Card is used each time you take a ride. Yes, paying is just a tap away! No need to fall in line & fumble for cash. Just tap & conveniently take the ride. Look ma no hands!
I breezed through alright after that purchase to the MRT upstairs in Cubao but the MRT ride is another "experience" in itself really.

Asian Viral Video Contest won by UP Students
University of the Philippines Diliman students, composed of nine Fine Arts majors, won US$5,000 in cash in an Asia-wide viral video contest, beating groups from Thailand, India, Singapore, and Indonesia. The UP students composed of Jaime Quiano, Clarence Santos, Lilli Beth Gelvezon, Cathlene Samiano, Pocholo De Villa, Marius Talampas, Emmenuel Carandang, Frank Magalona, and Joseph Torrijos, had previously won another $2,000 in December 2007 for a local competition that decided who would represent the Philippines at the Asia-wide level.
The Asian Viral Video competition required participants to create a one-minute long video that pokes fun at a fictional beverage called "Shake Pop," which represents the Shake Control feature in Sony Ericsson's latest Walkman mobile phone lineup. The feature lets users skip audio tracks by shaking their Walkman phone back and forth.
The UP students shot their video in a dimly lit street in Escolta in downtown Manila. The clip featured a big, balding bully who forcibly takes a "Shake Pop" bottle from a child. Unfortunately, the bully shoke the bottle too much, causing it to burst and knocked him off his feet. The child then draws a chalk line around the knocked-down bully before walking away.

Globe Wimax in October
Globe Wimax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) will start commercial operations in October 2008, Globe Telecoms announced this week. Globe Wimax will be rolled out in key cities of the Philippines, including Cebu and Metro Manila. Globe Wimax will sit alongside Globe's existing wireless broadband access services, including 3G/HSDPA and wi-fi. The service enables PC users to access the Internet via Wimax, which provides wider coverage and better throughput than wi-fi.
Globe will be using customer premise equipment (CPEs) and base stations from Chinese equipment vendor Huawei. Globe said it has been doing trials since the middle of last year and concluded first quarter this year in major cities of the Philippines.
Globe said its initial Globe Wimax rollout is not that significant relative to its Globe 3G investment though. At present, Globe has more than 2,000 3G/HSDPA base stations nationwide but did not reveal how many Globe Wimax base stations have been deployed so far. But expect capital expenditure on Globe Wimax to be higher next year as the company expands its rollout.
Globe said it will keep on expanding the service to cover as many urban areas possible. Uh-uh..bummer, i think there is a saturation already of ISP and Broadband providers in the Urban areas of the Philippines. What Globe Wimax should have done is to go to the countrysides where there is a big demand (yes, there is) for broadband or even dial up internet access, esp. since OFW's are mostly from the rural areas and would welcome means to cheaply get in touch with loved ones in the Philippines.
In terms of pricing, Globe Wimax said they do not expect Globe Wimax to be priced higher than existing wireless broadband services such as 3G/HSDPA. Globe Wimax is also positioned as an alternative to fixed broadband DSL service.

Google Adsense enhancements
I don't know if these Google Adsense enhancements will be really beneficial to bloggers and will mean better Adsense revenue. I guess time is the real judge when it comes to this. Google Adsense announced today that they are providing enhancements in its content network, to provide a better experience for users and better value for publishers and advertisers. The new enhancements announced today and that will be available in the coming months are:
* Frequency Capping: Enables advertisers to control the number of times a user sees an ad. Users will have a better experience on Google content network sites because they will no longer see the same ad over and over again.
* Frequency Reporting: Provides insight into the number of people who have seen an ad campaign, and how many times, on average, people are seeing these ads.
* Improved Ads Quality: Brings performance improvements within the Google content network.
* View-Through Conversions: Enables advertisers to gain insights on how many users visited their sites after seeing an ad. This helps advertisers determine the best places to advertise so users will see more relevant ads.
Google Adsense is enabling this functionality by implementing a DoubleClick ad-serving cookie across the Google content network. Using the DoubleClick cookie means that DoubleClick advertisers and publishers don't have to make any changes. This also means that with one click, users can opt out of a single cookie for both DoubleClick ad serving and the Google content network. If a user has already opted out of the DoubleClick cookie, that opt-out will also automatically apply to the Google content network. This of course is subject to the Priacy Policy of Google and the publisher site.

Sun Cellular Broadband Wireless
Sun Cellular, that poor third telco in the Philippines is to introduce soon a Smartbro prepaid buster called, " Sun Cellular Broadband Wireless." And if reports are to be believed, pricing for the Sun Cellular Broadband Wireless is at 999 pesos and is of Unlimited Usage, and the service is either 3G or HSDPA (3.5G). That's what wireless broadband in the Philippines should be! Since there is now a viable competition (Globe's is a joke, they only made it worse than Smartbro), expect Smartbro to lower their prices too. But since this is the third world, expect that not all areas will have 3G or HSDPA. Most areas actually will only have GPRS (2G) or EDGE (2.5G).

Sun Cellular Broadband Wireless will soon be rolled out. It also uses a USB dongle to act as a 3G/HSDPA modem.
